Have you ever gotten a headache from a certain scent?

This is not as rare as you may think. Many people report having this experience, and some studies suggest that up to about 10% of the population can indeed be affected by sensitivities to scents or perfumes. Therefore, consumers need to understand what can cause these headaches and how they might be prevented from buying a perfume that causes them in the future.

There are many chemical compounds in scented products, and each chemical compound has its own attributes. One of these is how it interacts with the sense of smell. There are some chemical compounds that when they enter your nose, can cause you to experience an allergic reaction or be nauseous.

One compound found in some perfumes is benzyl acetate. Benzyl acetate can cause other negative reactions including burning of the eyes and skin rashes.

One other compound found in certain fragrances that could induce headaches is hydrogen sulfide, which has a whiff of rotten egg smell. The concentration of this chemical should be below 30 ppm to be safe, but some perfumes have concentrations of hydrogen sulfide as high as 2000 ppm. This particular chemical is also used in petroleum products.

Since it can be so difficult to tell if a perfume will cause headaches, it may be best just to stick with perfumes that are known not to induce headaches or other adverse reactions. However, if you do choose to wear a perfume with one of the compounds listed above, it is advisable to first put on a very small amount and see how your body reacts. Unfortunately, some people are hypersensitive to scents even at low concentrations of these chemicals.

As you can see, there are many factors that go into why some perfumes give people headaches. Understanding the science behind these products may help you find a scent that is perfect for your needs and wants.
